Three self-advocates serve on the National Down Syndrome Congress Board of Directors. Each year, one self-advocate is elected by his or her peers at the convention’s Youth and Adult (Y&A) Conference for a three-year term. Any member with Down syndrome, who is 22 years old or older, in good standing in the NDSC, and having attended three (3) previous NDSC Annual Convention Y&A Conferences is eligible for this position. Self-Advocate Board Members also belong to the NDSC Self-Advocates Council, comprised of current and former NDSC board members who are passionate about advocating for and representing the Down syndrome community at the local, state, and national level.
Members of the SAC:
- Participate in quarterly conference calls
- Work to expand the Self-Advocate Book Project
- Provide leadership during the Annual Convention with the Y&A Conference, Friendship Club, and Greeters Program
- Advise the Youth & Adult Conference Team
- Are self-advocate voices on issues of national and local discrimination
