COVID-19 and Down syndrome

Misinformation about COVID-19 is reaching infodemic levels, perhaps even more so for people wanting to know how it may affect individuals with Down syndrome. The unprecedented spread of COVID-19 presents the world with a unique challenge and calls for a united response to better understand its impact on the Down syndrome community.

NEWLY UPDATED RESOURCE!  Working to keep bringing you accurate and up-to-date information, NDSC has again joined forces with other national organizations to update our COVID-19 & Down Syndrome Resource for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. This Resource focuses on new and updated information specific to variants, boosters, and school safety.  It also includes notes about testing, vaccines, mental health, ways to stay safe, and advocacy in hospital settings and for appropriate care (released 11/19/2021).

The CDC has prepared a great social story “How I got my COVID-19 Shot” to help visual learners understand the process.

We’ve heard from many people with questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, whether it is recommended for individuals with Down syndrome, and how it will help.  With the help of medical professionals, we’ve garnered answers to your frequently asked questions (updated 08/12/2021).  You can also find the Spanish version here.
