Keynote Speakers

Patricia E. Bauer -- Journalist. Mother of a young adult who has Down syndrome and is a survivor of leukemia. Previously reporter, bureau chief and editor at the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, and special assistant to the publisher of the Washington Post. Former member of UCLA medical Institutional Review Board. Can be found at www.patriciaebauer.blogspot.com .

Kim Edwards -- Author of the best-selling novel, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, Kim has won both the Whiting Award and the Nelson Algren Award. She is a graduate of the Iowa Writer’s Workshop and is an assistant professor of English at the University of Kentucky.

Viviana Fernandez -- Mother of a son with Down syndrome and producer/anchor for CNN en Español. Graduate of Jersey City State College and fluent in English and Spanish, she can be seen on the weekly feature program El Mundo Informa, Atlanta, GA.



Karen Gaffney -- Self advocate and president of the Karen Gaffney Foundation. Karen was the first person with Down syndrome to finish a relay swim across the English Channel and is a graduate of Portland Community College, Portland, OR.

Ann Turnbull, Ed.D. -- Co-founder of the Beach Center on Disability at The University of Kansas, she has been a professor, teacher, researcher, and advocate for individuals with disabilities for more than 30 years. In 1999, she was selected by a national consortium as an individual who has made the most significant contribution during the 20th Century toward enhancing quality of life for individuals with mental retardation.

Audrey Wagnon -- Self advocate and co-founder of the B.E.S.T. Network. Audrey serves both as a mentor and a performing arts teacher through her work with B.E.S.T., Kansas City, MO.

Creighton Wall -- Self advocate and author of I used to be down, but now…I Love My Life! Creighton is very active in kick boxing, and resides in Kearney, NE.

A wonderful opportunity to view the best films, clips and documentaries ever produced starring individuals with Down syndrome.

Radio Disney is the DJ/Host for the Self Advocate & Sibling Mixer on Friday evening and a one hour concert at lunch on Saturday. They will bring A TON of free stuf f along with games/contests.
